Product Description
Millions of Americans are rediscovering the pleasures of locally grown food. By eating food grown close to home, they can boost their health, reduce their carbon footprint, support a robust local economy, and enhance their sense of community . . . all while savoring scrumptious, satisfying meals. It’s no wonder that the number of farmers’ markets has more than doubled in the last 15 years, and the number of people getting produce straight from the farm has increased almost twentyfold in the same period!

But novice locavores can find themselves stumped by basic questions. What’s the best way to shop at a farmers’ market? Is it possible to eat locally all year long? And just what does one do with braising greens, anyway?

Enter The Locavore Way by Amy Cotler. This friendly guide to eating locally gives readers all the information they need to buy, cook, and eat close to home. Cotler covers all the basics — why eat locally, where to find local foods, how to eat locally on a budget, what questions to ask at the farmers’ market, and even how to grow one’s own food. She offers savvy shopping tips, simple guides to preparing whatever is in season, ideas for bringing out the best flavors in farm-fresh foods, and strategies to make the harvest last.

Cotler demystifies local foods for the newcomer and demonstrates how eating within one’s own “foodshed” is as simple as it is satisfying. The Locavore Way is at once a practical, how-to guide and a celebration of all that is fresh and flavorful. With this handy resource tucked into their canvas market tote, readers will have the information they need to find, select, store, prepare, and preserve the bounty . . . all year long!

5 out of 5 stars Great book   April 11, 2010
food lover (NYC)
This is a great book. Cotler is a wonderful writer and she makes the local food movement accessible to a newcomer like me who wants to support local food producers but not sure where to begin. Plus she's not dogmatic or out to guilt trip anyone. Her love of real food emanates from every page and is contagious. And there are tons of recipes to explore. (Check out her blog as well. She is a real find!)

5 out of 5 stars A great find!   April 13, 2010

A great find! I was attracted to this book for its comprehensive look at becoming a locavore and by the comments by those in the know on the back flap. I also noticed that the knowledgable Nach Waxman of the Kitchen Arts and Letters bookstore in NYC recommends it. This compact book with its fabulous layout covers everything I need to know -- all in practical style that is fun to read and inspiring. I highly recommend it and plan to start shopping and cooking this week. Delicious!

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely great read!   April 15, 2010

I'd highly recommend this book. Ms. Cotler, who seems to be both a serious foodie and social activist, been doing this for awhile and really knows her stuff. There's lots out there on the subject, but this book covers everything you need to know to becoming a locavore -- practically, clearly and intelligently. It focuses on both the pleasure and practical side of eating locally. I've been at this awhile and still found it extremely useful, but I'm giving it to my friends, even the ones who aren't eating locally yet, so they'll know what to do and get inspired too. An added plus? Lots of references, recipes and recipe ideas, a great layout and FUN to read.

5 out of 5 stars The Locavore Way   April 19, 2010

I just finished reading this book and I'd recommend it to both beginning and knowledgeable locavores. In fact, I wasn't even sure what a locavore was until now. The book is written in a friendly style by a woman who clearly knows her stuff. Its full of useful information from shopping and seasonal cooking, to how to find local food when dining out. There is a reference section with ideas on how to cook every vegetable, wonderful recipes and a fabulous glossary explaining all the terms. I even loved the illustrations. This book was a find.

5 out of 5 stars Loved This! Learned So Much!   April 19, 2010
Book Luvver (New York, NY)
A friend gave me this book and I loved it. Cotler is a fun, engaging writer, never a dreary scold. She presents information about the slow food movement in a yummy way that's easy to digest (sorry, couldn't resist). Now, when I go to the market - be it the supermarket or the Greenmarket - I'm much more aware of what I'm buying and what its provenance might be. Sure, I still might buy the Chilean asparagus because it's cheaper and comes out earlier than my local farmers'. Cotler doesn't expect her readers to be strict fanatics. (Ya gotta start somewhere!) But, after reading the book, I definitely savor the opportunity to buy seasonal, locally-grown food, which, as Cotler points out, is not only good for the planet, but a treat for the palate. Local food is just fresher and more flavorful. I also loved the recipes Cotler sprinkles throughout. They're painless! Cotler makes clear that fresh ingredients are the main event and that they don't need a lot of fussing. City-dweller that I am, I only wish I could have my own garden out back. Oh well, I do have the Greenmarket, and it's time to go pick up some ramps!
